Parks, Recreation and Open Space
Project Title: Randolph Township Bicycle and Pedestrian Path
Project Location: Randolph Township, Morris County, New Jersey
Project Sponsor: Randolph Township

ASGECI was contracted to perform a wetland delineation and to obtain NJ Department of Environmental Protection wetlands and stream encroachment permits for expansion of an existing bikeway within Randolph Township. Approximately seven miles of bikeway existed within the Township; linking open spaces, park sites, school sites and the Municipal Complex.

The project's primary purposes were to: 1) connect residential developments within Mt. Freedom through Brundage Park to junctures with existing bikeways; 2) extend the bikeway linkage from Brundage Park through newly acquired municipal open space (Cohn Farm) to an intersection with existing bikeway elements at the Township's High School, Middle School and Schoolhouse Road Elementary School complex and; 3) complete linkage to existing bikeway elements located in Freedom Park. An eight-foot wide path was designed to accommodate bicycle, pedestrian, and wheelchair use. The entire length of the proposed bike route will total approximately 13,000 linear feet. This was the third construction phase of the bikeway expansion and funded through New Jersey Department of Transportation.

ASGECI reviewed existing published information and performed a field investigation of vegetation, soils and hydrology at the site. ASGECI accompanied the Kinsey Associates Landscape Architect in the field to identify the optimum alignment for the bikeway. The proposed bikeway was designed so as to utilize existing forest paths and roadways and to avoid large trees and wetlands to the extent feasible. ASGECI prepared an application for a Wetlands General permit #17 for trail construction and a Minor Stream Encroachment permit application, and submitted them to NJDEP for review. NJDEP verified the wetland delineation and issued both approvals. Timing restrictions were imposed on tree clearing activities to minimize impacts to Indiana bat habitat. This project has been constructed.
